Meet Cole Lamson
Cole took my Advanced Quantitative Methods in Agricultural Economics course in the fall of 2012, where
he learned how to use pivot-tables and macros in Excel. After graduating in 2013 he took a job at JBS,
soon after sending me the following email.

I’m in my second week at JBS in Greeley, Co working in Beef Scheduling and Transportation. One thing I have taken responsibility for is our daily Make Sheet Accuracy Reports, which help grade the plants and allow us to see if they are making what’s on the schedule and if not why. Also, I send out daily cooler inventory reports. These reports pull data from our internal systems and use macros to update the pivot tables and work with the thousands of product codes. It’s pretty cool because the main spreadsheet opens with instructions and a series of buttons that run the macros and are meant to be user friendly.
This reminded me of the optimal days on feed project we did in class. In just a few days it is amazing to see how EVERYONE that I have come in contact with so far uses pivot tables and macros daily ( some of which take hours to run). I’ve already learned some new excel tricks and I look forward to communicating some of the projects I work on that might give you some ideas on new class projects.
