Caitlin works for Williams Companies, and soon after graduation she sent me an email about the type of data analysis she was performing, knowing it would help me communicate to students the importance of knowing Excel.

Companies often wish to maintain statistics on events they wish to avoid, things they might call "incidents." Part of her job was to maintain a database of certain incidents, and give a presentation to the company's Board of Directors, where statistics on the incidents is shown in PowerPoint using complex line charts.
This sounds easier than it really is. See, she manages large amounts of data, and must communicate that data succinctly in a few charts the Directors can easily comprehend (examples shown below), and she could not do this without Excel.
